Why your podcast content should be timeless

Time is the essence of everything, right? And time, is also money. So why would you waste your time creating podcast episodes that have an expiration date?

If you’re trying to figure out how to maximize your content strategy just follow this simple rule: make your podcast episodes evergreen. Online content in King, and content should be relevant for more than a week.

Why making timeless content is smart

Think about it: if you’re spending 6+ hours creating, recording, editing and publishing content, why would you shoot yourself in the (digital) foot and give your amazing content a short life shelf, i.e. only valuable and usable for less than a week?

Earlier in the year, it was announced that Oprah was taking old episodes of her talk show and turning them into a podcast titled, The Oprah Winfrey Show: The Podcast. If the most powerful woman in the world can reuse episodes, girl, so can you, and this is why.

Old content still matters

Creating resources that make sense in the long run is a great strategy to solidify your online presence, and rank higher on organic Google searches. Google will favor older content and web pages versus new, so if you create content that is relevant and doesn’t necessarily expire, then you’re working toward really building a strong foundation for your podcast.

If you record an episode in January about, let’s say healthy eating, here are the things that you should and shouldn’t do:

❌ Mention specific months:

  • January, the first week of the year, the first trimester of the year

  • Example: β€œTo compensate the overeating over the Christmas Holidays, it’s time to get back on track on healthy diets. Yes, right in the first week of January'β€œ!

βœ… Mention β€˜the holidays’:

  • The Holidays could be at least 3 times in the year: Summer vacations, Thanksgiving and Friendsgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, Eid al-Adha, Easter, etc

  • Example: β€œAfter overeating during the holidays, it’s time to get back on track on healthy eating”.

You don’t need to reinvent the wheel

According to the example above, one piece of content gives you the opportunity to reuse it at least 3 different times in a year! This should give you a well deserved break from original content creation in times when you may struggle to record an extra episode that week. Also, it will boost your old content numbers with virtually no effort!

On the receiving end, you’ll be providing more opportunities for a wider audience to connect with your content.

If you take this approach to every piece of content that you create, imagine how much more effective your strategy will be moving forward!

In a nutshell: work smarter, not harder.
