10 ideas to celebrate International Podcast Day

Whether you’ve been podcasting for a while or you just started releasing episodes, you can’t miss International Podcast Day.

What is International Podcast Day?

International Podcast Day™ is an international celebration of the power of podcasts and its community. It happens every year on September 30th.

The first National Podcast Day was observed in the United States on September 30, 2014, and only a year after, Dave and Steve Lee announced that the day would be rebranded as International Podcast Day, to reflect its worldwide impact. Over the years, Dave and Steve Lee have live-streamed +200 hours from nearly 100 nations featuring +300 podcasters who shared their podcast journeys, personal stories, and expertise.

The world-wide event is a great opportunity to connect with fellow podcasters, listeners, podcast enthusiasts, and leaders in the podcasting industry.

How can you get involved on International Podcast Day?

Firstly, give International Podcast Day a follow on social media, and use #InternationalPodcastDay and #ThePodcastSpace so that you can be part of the movement.

If you’re looking to join the fun, here’s the livestreaming schedule for the day, according to International Podcast Day’s official website:

On September 30, join our live broadcast on this IPD LIVE page or via our YouTube Channel, Twitter account, Facebook page, or Twitch stream.

If you’re looking for inspiration, here are a few tips from our team:

  1. Remind listeners to subscribe to your show

    • Perfect for beginners or a podcast’s soft launch!

    • Also, great if you’ve been podcasting for a while but don’t seem to ever remember to ask listeners to subscribe to the show!

  2. Throw a get-to-know-me live party on Zoom, LinkedIn Audio Event, or YouTube

    • This is the perfect way to dab into a video episode without the pressure of making something out of it, besides having fun!

    • LinkedIn Audio Events are relatively new and it’s a fantastic opportunity to test a new feature out and ‘keeping it fresh’ for your listeners

    • Don’t forget to hit ‘record’ and add it to your podcast feed or make it exclusive for your subscribers

  3. Celebrate the fact that you've been podcasting for a specific amount of time

    • Can you remember the last time you actually celebrated or acknowledged a milestone? Make it count!

  4. Launch another podcast or cross-promote the show

    • If you’re feeling ambitious or want to try something different, what a great timing to announce it and do a ‘feature’ or ‘swap’, where you introduce the show to your listeners. This is one of the best ways to increase your downloads and subscribers.

  5. Take the day off to do big-picture thinking

    • This is the perfect way to place your podcast as a rightful tool in your business or brand. Big ideas come from having time to do so. Block it off. Want to do it with me? I do podcast power hours!

  6. Initiate conversations with your listeners on social media

    • When was the last time you actually held meaningful conversations with your listeners? Take this opportunity to hear about their pain points (that you could create content about), their favorite moments of the show, or what they’d like to focus on next!

  7. Create unique Questions on your Spotify for Podcasters account

    • PodInbox account to elevate the connection with your listeners

    • Create a fan page for your podcast where listeners can leave you a voice message (which you play during the show), support your show with donations, and have a place to send superfans to!

  8. Refresh your podcast cover

    • Your podcast art cover can always be improved! Maybe the cover you currently have doesn’t reflect your brand colors anymore, or maybe you now have a sleek headshot that you’re proud to display. Do it!

  9. Launch a line of podcast merchandise

    • This is almost every podcaster’s dream: to sell their own merch. Watch our friend (and master of the side hustle) Travis Brown break it down for you.

10. Reach out to your favorite podcaster and thank them or invite them to be a guest on your show!

  • International Podcast Day is all about connecting to other podcasters, so make it social!

What should YOU focus on?

Here’s what cofounder Dave Lee had to say when I asked him about where should podcasters put their efforts on:

“It’s important to focus on quality as a priority.

Quality relates to sound, engagement, consistency, editing, and so much more.

Also, never stop learning. The industry continues to change and grow, and this requires you as a creator to remain committed to working on your craft and improve your skills.”

And finally, here are the benefits of being involved with International Podcast Day, according to its founders:

  • Grow your podcast by gaining new listeners, subscribers, and reviews

  • Find new podcasts to subscribe to by following #InternationalPodcastDay

  • Connect with fellow podcasters, podcast listeners, and audio enthusiasts

  • Learn about new tools, methods, and tricks to improve your podcast

  • Learn from podcasting, marketing, and production experts

  • Meet new podcast friends online that enjoy the same podcasts you do

  • Meeting up with podcasters and podcast buddies makes lasting friendships

  • Learn about the current state and future of the podcast industry

  • Connect with your listeners and Patreon supporters throughout the day

  • Joining a meetup can create friendships and networking opportunities

  • Launching a new podcast because you learned so much about podcasting
