5: Types of Audiences and Listeners

If you're a podcaster, you may be creating content for a specific audience, but have you considered the different types of audiences you may have?

This episode is going to briefly uncover the three types of audiences that podcasters have: current audience, potential listeners, and new listeners.

Each audience has different characteristics and behaves differently, so thatโ€™s why itโ€™s important to consider what the listener journey may be on each one.

Current Podcast Audience

The current audience includes occasional listeners and super fans.

The occasional listener consumes content based on the titles or topics of your episodes and may only listen to certain types of episodes, such as solo episodes or guest interviews. Super fans, on the other hand, will listen to every episode, share your content, and may help you gain new listeners.

Potential Listeners / Audience

Potential listeners include guests and โ€˜window shoppersโ€™.

Guests may be new to your network and may become listeners after appearing on your show. Window shoppers are individuals who are part of your network or community, but may have never listened to a podcast.

They have the potential to become listeners if you discuss something specific they are interested in. It's also important to remember that not everyone in your social media or email newsletter will become a podcast listener, and that's okay. Your podcast is just one aspect of your brand, and you don't need to look at those individuals as a frustration or a lost cause. Instead, focus on using your podcast as a tool for your business and online brand.
